Drangsnes – a hidden gem in the heart of Westfjords in Iceland

Drangsnes is a hidden gem in Westfjords, Iceland. A small fishing town of only 60-70 inhabitans in a beautiful & peaceful surroundings. You could go and see puffins, watch the seals and do some sea-angling. The accomodation is lovely and right on the sea front. The bathrooms are clean and the beds comfortable. Included is a proper breakfast and the staff is helpful and friendly. In the foreshore Drangsnes has a public “hot tubs” and close by is a small swimming pool.

Learn how to get there and find places to watch the northern lights

Below you can see how to get there and couple of routes to popular places for viewing the northern lights. Before you go be sure to check out the northern lights forecast and see in real time if the location you plan to go to has much of clouds here on the northern lights webcam page.

How to get there

From Keflavik airport you drive through Reykjavik and all the way up to the Westfjords. It should take you around 4-5 hours to drive there. We recommend to rent a 4×4 jeep if you plan to rent a car to go there. However before you head out to Drangsnes on your own in the wintertime, be sure the road condition & weather forecast is good. You can e.g. check the live webcams for Djúpavegur road in the Westfjords here and the weather forecast is here. Also it is a good practice to leave your travel plan with Safetravel before you go.

Idea #1: Strandavegur

Close to Dranganes is a small fjord. The road is named Strandavegur and you will need to drive for some 1 hour to get there. At this location you can do some hiking and use the beautiful mountains as a background for some northern lights photographs.

Idea #2: Djúpvegur

South of Drangsnes is a small bay. It is a great viewpoint if you want to have the lights of the small fishingtown as part of the photographs. It will take some 1 hour to drive there.
