The 4 days itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival in the afternoon at the Blue Lagoon

You begin your journey by going to the Blue Lagoon. You can either go and take a bath in it or simply take some fresh walk in the area. A lot of interest hiking in the lava field around the Blue Lagoon. After this we head to the Reykjavik area and check in at your hotel.

Day 2 – The Golden Circle in a Super jeep

The well known Golden Circle is on our plate today. We will be visiting four of the most outstanding attractions in South Iceland today. We will begin at the Thingvellir National Park, move forward to the Gullfoss waterfall and the Geysir geothermal hot spring area. There will also be some snowmobiling in the great highlands close to Gullfoss area.

Day 3 – Northern Lights hunt in the evening

This day will be a day of relaxation. In the evening you will join a bus tour out of the city to escape the light pollution and hunt for the dancing northern lights – a natural wonder also known as the Aurora Borealis. You should be back to Reykjavik around midnight but it all depend on when the northern lights will show up – and if they show up at all. Here you can some Northern Lights Iceland images.

Day 4 – Cultural time

Depending on when your flight is, you might want to visit some of the great museums or art galleries around Reykjavik city. Or even just relax at the hotel, shop some at Laugavegur or even take a bath in one of the publish swimming pools around the city. For many years Icelanders have been modifying 4×4 jeeps to be able to reach off season areas in the highlands. In this six days´ tour with Isafold Travel we will be offering travellers a real self drive adventure in the southern Iceland. A real break through for foreigners wanting to see the real Iceland, not just Reykjavik. You will be driving the specially modified Land Rovers – the “ISAKs”. Part of the tour will to visit the well known attractions at Gullfoss, Geysir and the UNESCO heritage listed Thingvellir.

THE 6 DAYS ITINERARY

DAY 1 – ARRIVAL IN ICELAND


You will be picked up at the Keflavik airport or in Reykjavik and we will go to our office in Gardabaer (Reykjavik area). Your guide will go over all the safety rules and practical matters before we head in the modified Land Rover Defenders to Hotel Highland in south Iceland. We will stay in the the hotel for next 4 nights. When we arrive at the hotel a marvellous dinner will await us.



DAY 2 – THE TRAIL TO THE VATNAJÖKULL GLACIER

The first day we will drive towards Vatnajokull glacier. We will follow the trail, passing the Veidivotn lakes, and aim to reach the edge of the glacier, before we return back to Hotel Highland. In the evening we will have some sauna or a bath int he hot pot outside.


DAY 3 – LANDMANNALAUGAR

In day 3 we will go to the pearl – Landmannalaugar. It will be a bit of a challenge to get there – some crossing of rivers and so on – but it is well worth it as we will be soaking in a geothermal nature pool in Landmannalaugar. In addition we will do some hiking in the rhyolitic lava before we head back to our hotel.


DAY 4 – VOLCANO HEKLA

Day 4 will lead us to the world known volcano Hekla. We will be exploring its surroundings and hike to the top – app. 1450m height. When we head back to the hotel we will be visiting the exhibition of motorized travel in the Icelandic highlands in the Hrauneyjar Highland Centre.


Day 5 – THE GOLDEN CIRCLE AND THE POWER LINE TRAIL

Now it is time to go West! We will follow the power line trail to Haifoss – a beautiful waterfall. It will of course involve crossing of couple of rivers on the way. Having visited Haifoss now it is time to go and visit some of the more traditional Golden Circle attractions in the south – Gullfoss waterfall, the hotspring Geysir and in the end we will visit the national park Thingvellir. After seeing all these pearls we will head back to Reykjavik. We will visit our head office in Gardabaer and then you will go to Hotel Viking in Hafarfjordur, where you will take part in a Viking festival in the evening. A lot of great food and some “Icelandic beverages” to help you swallow the “traditional Icelandic food”.



Day 6 – DEPARTURE DAY

You will be picked up directly from your hotel by the fly bus going to Keflavik airport – and it will take you some 25 min to get there. You can of course stay couple of days more in Reykjavik to enjoy the vibrant cultural life in the capital or even rent one of the Isaks jeeps to drive to some other area in Iceland. THE ITINERARY

FIRST STOP – THINGVELLIR NATIONAL PARK


You will be picked up from your hotel in Reykjavik. First we will head to Thingvellir National Park, where world first parliament – Alþingi – was established in year 930. It was granted a UNESCO World Heritage status in 2004.

SECOND STOP – GULLFOSS WATERFALL

The second stop is at Gullfoss waterfall that is located in the canyon of Hvítá river. It flows down in beautiful curves – almost like a “staircase”. Many believe this waterfall to be one of the most beautiful waterfall in the world – it is however not the largest in either height or volume it is just beautiful. At Gullfoss you will have traditional Icelandic food. It is included in the price.


THIRD STOP – LANGJÖKULL GLACIER

The third stop will be at Langjökull glacier, which is the second largest ice cap in Iceland. The largest is Vatnajökull. The translation of Langjökull means the Long Glacier and it is true as it is around 50km long.


FOURTH STOP – GEYSER

The fourth stop is at the world famous Great Geysir and actually the word geyser is derived from this one and only Great Geysir in Haukadal in Iceland. Greyser is however not active now but a smaller version of it – Strokkur – erupts every 5-7 minutes.


THE LAST STOP – THE CRATER KERID

Kerid is a volcanic crater close to Selfoss in south Iceland. It is part of several crater lakes in the area. It is around 3,000 years old. This is your last stop in the Golden Circle Iceland tour.

The 2 days itinerary

Dec 31st – New Year’s Eve

You will begin your New Year holidays by exploring Reykjavik with a local guide. The first stop is a Iceland Rescue team Firework sales. Each year some 600 tonnes of firework – yes around 2 kg / 4.4 lbs per inhabitant – go up into the skies. At the firework sale we will buy a bomb to take with us on our tour – a very special explosion to be enjoyed at our last stop. Our next stop will be a old cemetery in Reykjavik. We will hear about whey the dead rise from their graves on New Years Eve! Next we head out to Hafnarfjordur where we will meet the elves! We will take a look at their home – the mysterious “elf stones”. The story say that the elves are out and about with us on the New Year´s Eve. We will now head over to a beautiful forest grove where we´ll light a little bonfire and make a toast to life and love.
The New Year´s Eve buffet dinner will be at the award winning VOX Restaurant on the Hilton hotel. It emphasizes a Nordic Cuisine with a flavor of ingredients straight from local farmers.
When it is getting close to midnight we will go to a popular viewing spot in Reykjavik and light our own gold sparklers. Now the fun is just beginning… After midnight the pubs and nightclubs go wild! well into the morning. We will take part in the fun.

Jan. 1st: New Year’s Day

This is great day to go and see some of Iceland´s natural highlights, such as the Golden Circle, with Geyser and Gullfoss or relax in the Blue Lagoon. In Iceland Thorláksmessa is part of Christmas. Most people use the day to finish decorating the home and the Christmas tree. In the evening people go out to Laugavegur and finish buying Christmas presents. Another tradition is to eat the putrefied skate with potatoes, but for many foreigners it is a challenge!

Day 3. Christmas Eve Day, Dec 24th

You will do a escorted morning hike with myth and mysteries expert through the woods of Öskjuhlið. You will learn about the secrets of the Icelandic folklore with all its elves, monsters and trolls stories. When you walk through the little forest small surprises will await you here and there!
