For many years Icelanders have been modifying 4×4 jeeps to be able to reach off season areas in the highlands. In this six days´ tour with Isafold Travel we will be offering travellers a real self drive adventure in the southern Iceland. A real break through for foreigners wanting to see the real Iceland, not just Reykjavik. You will be driving the specially modified Land Rovers – the “ISAKs”. Part of the tour will to visit the well known attractions at Gullfoss, Geysir and the UNESCO heritage listed Thingvellir.

THE 6 DAYS ITINERARYDAY 1 – ARRIVAL IN ICELANDSource: northernlightsiceland.com via Incredible Iceland on Pinterest You will be picked up at the Keflavik airport or in Reykjavik and we will go to our office in Gardabaer (Reykjavik area). Your guide will go over all the safety rules and practical matters before we head in the modified Land Rover Defenders to Hotel Highland in south Iceland. We will stay in the the hotel for next 4 nights. When we arrive at the hotel a marvellous dinner will await us.

We will follow the trail, passing the Veidivotn lakes, and aim to reach the edge of the glacier, before we return back to Hotel Highland. In the evening we will have some sauna or a bath int he hot pot outside.

It will be a bit of a challenge to get there – some crossing of rivers and so on – but it is well worth it as we will be soaking in a geothermal nature pool in Landmannalaugar. In addition we will do some hiking in the rhyolitic lava before we head back to our hotel.

We will be exploring its surroundings and hike to the top – app. 1450m height. When we head back to the hotel we will be visiting the exhibition of motorized travel in the Icelandic highlands in the Hrauneyjar Highland Centre.

We will follow the power line trail to Haifoss – a beautiful waterfall. It will of course involve crossing of couple of rivers on the way. Having visited Haifoss now it is time to go and visit some of the more traditional Golden Circle attractions in the south – Gullfoss waterfall, the hotspring Geysir and in the end we will visit the national park Thingvellir. After seeing all these pearls we will head back to Reykjavik. We will visit our head office in Gardabaer and then you will go to Hotel Viking in Hafarfjordur, where you will take part in a Viking festival in the evening. A lot of great food and some “Icelandic beverages” to help you swallow the “traditional Icelandic food”.

You can of course stay couple of days more in Reykjavik to enjoy the vibrant cultural life in the capital or even rent one of the Isaks jeeps to drive to some other area in Iceland.
